It is easily done with strands in multiples of 2 but I am aware that it can be done with odd numbers of thread. When you are stitching, as you put your needle into the top of the fabric to push it through, you split the two strands where one is on the left of the needle and one is on the right of the needle. This creates a neat, knotless start on the back of the work and is only possible with an even number of thread stands.
